Investing and the Silver Dollar - What You Need to Know

Investing is not what it used to be. Serious investors once put all their proverbial eggs in one basket - usually the stock market - but they are now seeking to diversify and find more security and less risk in this volatile and frightening economic period. They should have paid attention when their grandparents gave them their first silver dollar collections!

These so-called experts are finally coming to realize what many of us have been saying for years now is truer than they wanted to believe. Precious metals are the most solid investment for your financial future and there is no easier way to start investing in silver than to start collecting the silver dollar.

The Morgan Series (1878 - 1904)

Though it wasn't the first, the Morgan Silver Dollar was struck in the United States between the years of 1878 and 1904 (and then again for one year in 1921), and it remains quite popular among collectors. It was designed by George T. Morgan in 1878.

The three most valuable and difficult to find of the Morgan series are:

· 1889-CC
· 1893-S
· 1895 Proof

The Peace Series (1921 - 1935)

The Peace Silver Dollar was struck between 1921 and 1935, first between 1921 and 1928 and then later from 1934 until 1935. Designed by Anthony De Francisci, this coin was given the name Peace because of the appearance of the word on the reverse side. This was the last of the dollar silver coins to be minted for United States circulation.

The American Silver Eagle (1986 - present)

The American Silver Eagle has the distinction of being named as the official silver bullion coin of the U.S. that was first released in late November 1986. The face was first designed by Adolph A. Weinman in 1916, with the reverse crafted by John Mercanti in 1986.

Each coin is guaranteed to be 99.99% pure silver and one troy ounce by the United States Mint. On orders of Congress, the American Eagle coin may be used to fund Individual Retirement Accounts and other related investments.

Despite - or perhaps because of - its many changes over the years, the silver dollar remains one of the smartest and most cost-effective investment opportunities around.
